DIY Fall Scents for Stovetops

DIY Fall Scents for Stove Tops

Fall is the time of year when I think of apple cider on a hot stove, or baked apple pies fresh out the oven. You can feel it in the breeze as you walk outside, and you can smell the lovely fall aromas in the air.

When I think of fall aromas, these simple household ingredients come to mind. All you need is a pot of water and a stove set to medium low. Keep your eye on the water level every so often. I use a BIG SOUP pot for mine, so I don’t have to run back to the stove too often.

You DO NOT need to have all these on hand. Take your time and experiment with the different herbs and see what concoction you come up with.

As you clean your house for the holidays or want to get into the holiday spirit, I have a few holiday aromas that will bring you into the spirit and have your house smelling like a winter oasis in no time.

Remember to add water ever hour or so. Don’t let the herbs burn.

What you need:

Here are a few easy recipes that you can try. REMEMBER, keep your pot on medium low. If its a small pot LOW. Good luck!

Stewed Steak and Potatoes

This recipe is easy comfort food that takes minimal effort, and with a few household ingredients, dinner will be ready in no time.

When it comes to the choice of steak you use, choose what is best for you. I didn’t have a lot of money and saw some top round steak on sale for $2.00 a pack, I got 3 packs and made a magical dinner recipe for the family.

If you do decide to use the top round, I must warn you it is tough so you want to let the meat simmer as I did. I choose to let it simmer for an hour because I had other things to tend to but in about 45 minutes this recipe will be ready.

You can also make cornbread or have dinner rolls to help gather the gravy. If you don’t want to have potatoes, you can substitute the potatoes and make a side of sticky rice.

Stewed Steak and Potatoes

This recipe reminds me of the most savory comfort food. The meat will be tender and the potatoes flavorful.
Prep Time 10 mins
Cook Time 1 hr 15 mins
Total Time 1 hr 25 mins

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds of Top Round Steak
  • 3 carrots diced
  • 3 yellow potatoes diced
  • 1 Tablespoon of garlic powder
  • 1 Tablespoon of onion powder
  • 1 Tablespoon dill weed
  • 4 Tablespoons of kosher salt
  • 2 Tablespoons of pepper
  • 1/2 cup of water
  • 2 Tablespoons of flour

Instructions

  • Preheat your pot to medium high, use some oil to coat bottom. I use my cast iron skillet.
  • Add steak to pan. Optional: you can season your steak any way you would like. I use a salt and pepper
  • Fry on both sides for 5-7 minutes. Remove from skillet
  • Reduce heat to medium
  • Add flour and stir nonstop. You will notice the flour will start to change color. Slowly pour some water. KEEP STIRRING because you are making a roux for the stew.
  • Once all the water has been added, add your steak and vegetables back to the pot and bring to a boil. Add your seasonings and once it reaches a boil, turn down to medium low and stir occasionally.
  • Let cook for 1 hour. Taste and add seasonings to your liking.

Notes

This goes great with rice, dressing, or eating cornbread.

Scrambled Eggs

Scrambled Eggs

makingparadiseathome
This is my go to easy scrambled egg recipe. I like to call this my fail proof plan.

Ingredients

  • 5 eggs beaten
  • 1/4 cup of milk
  • 2 Tablespoons of olive oil
  • 1 slice of butter

Instructions

  • Heat olive oil and butter in your pan on medium heat.
  • In a bowl mix your eggs and milk together until nice and creamy
  • Add mixture to pan and let cook for 45 seconds before stirring. I use a spatula and fold my eggs into each other. It allows the egg mixture to run into the pan and cook to my liking.
  • Cook for 5 minutes on medium

Notes

Note: I always use a cast-iron skillet for my eggs, it is something about the flavor a seasoned cast iron skillet gives your food.

Fried Cabbage

 Fried Cabbage

This is the perfect fall side that is easy to make and quick to prepare. When I don't use my slow cooker, I love to use a cast iron skillet for my cooking. The cast iron brings out the richness in the food and it reminds me of the old timey country dinners.

Ingredients

  • 1 medium cabbage
  • 1/2 onion
  • 1/2 bell pepper
  • 1 teaspoon of garlic
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red peppers
  • 1 Tablespoon of salt
  • 1 Tablespoon of pepper
  • 1/3 cup of water
  • sprinkle of white sugar optional

Instructions

  • In a large pot, I use a large cast iron skillet, add oil and preheat pan
  • Dice cabbage, onion, and bell pepper and add to skillet. Make sure it is on medium high and stir often.
  • As the cabbage begins to fry add all your seasonings to the pan.
  • Slowly add a few drops of water to the pan, you will see the cabbage drippings turn brown, STIR, that is the flavor. The water will evaporate quickly.
  • Turn heat down to medium low and add a sprinkle, a baby spoon of white sugar. You do not have to add sugar, completely optional.
  • Simmer for 20-25 minutes.
